INNER WHEEL NEWS

August 2009

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . President Pam opened the meeting by welcoming our speaker, Mr Richard Poad; also Rosalind, a guest of Jacky Sheppard. It was with deepest sympathy our thoughts were with Mike and Jean Leaman on the recent death of their son. We were very pleased to welcome back Pauline Smith and Rosyln Walters after their bouts of illness.

Richard Poad gave a most interesting illustrated talk entitled ‘Mother flew Spitfires’. This was the amazing story of the Air Transport Auxiliary – known as the Ancient and Tattered Airmen - which was founded in 1939 and women pilots were first introduced in 1940. It became necessary in order to enable aircraft to be delivered from factories to the operational squadrons. There were 147 different types of aircraftwhich these brave young women and older WW1 veterens continued to deliver throughout WWII. This proved a rather topical subject as it is just 70 years since WWII began.

During August we visited Enid Blyton’s garden on a gloriously hot day – this was followed by tea and cakes.

A number of our members visited Camberley Inner Wheel Club for tea – and to listen to a speaker on ‘Punch and Judy’ which was very amusing and enjoyed by all.

Tom Conlin’s next convoy will be in October, so there is little time to collect items. Do contact Hilary Mear if you have anything you wish to contribute, including ‘Joy Bags’ and ‘Toy Bags’.

Arrangements for the Progressive Supper are well in hand with members being given information regarding the venue for starters.

Tickets, costing £14, for the trip to Bath Christmas Market on 2nd December will be on sale at the September meeting.

The September meeting will be a poetry reading – members are asked to read their favourite poem.

The October meeting will be a great attraction. Joanna Marshall, daughter of David, immediate past president of our Rotary Club, will tell us how she makes her delicious chocolates – with some to sell for eager customers.
