INNER WHEEL NEWS

        May 2009

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . The meeting opened with President Beryl thanking Hilary Corio for so ably chairing last month’s meeting in her absence. Beryl then gave a short report on the conference which was held in Belfast. Many acquaintances were met up with and the excellent speakers made it an unforgettable occasion.

We were pleased to see Moira Smith and June Martin, both still recovering from their problems, back again at our meeting. A letter had been received from Pauline Smith who is slowly recovering; we hope to see her again soon.

The recent 60th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Ascot was much enjoyed by many of our members; and the scrap book that we presented was much appreciated (we are indebted to Lindsay Nutbrown for making this possible).

Any poets or authors amongst us should be encouraged to write ‘Graces’. These would then be submitted to ‘The Spinning Wheel’.

The Marie Curie Foundation is proposing to hold Tea Parties between 12th June and 12th July. This will be discussed at a later date.

Alice Pack had received a letter from our link club in Bathurst, Australia, with news of their club activities..

Plans for our Inner Wheel Garden Party, which is being held on 8th July, from 2 p.m. at Queensmead, the home of Sue Price, are well in hand. We are grateful to Ruth Charles for making some Inner Wheel bunting in blue and yellow as decoration. There will be stalls for bric-a-brac, home produce, and books, plus the usual raffle. The afternoon would not, of course, be complete without the usual delicious tea with home-made sandwiches and cakes for which our Inner Wheel is renowned. And all for the paltry sum of £5 for members and £7.50 for guests. Anyone wishing to donate books, please contact Jacqui Butcher on 01344 762758 – she will be happy to collect.

The ‘knit and natter’ mornings are well attended, another blanket was displayed and several more are in progress. It was suggested that in future we keep a photo record of completed blankets.

Stephanie Lord gave a short presentation of her work in Romania with children in orphanages, sometimes tied to their beds with no physical contact. Over time they show autistic tendencies and desperately need someone to hold them! Touch is important and massage helps. The charity, FRODO, works to improve the care of orphans. It was a truly moving presentation, and we were able to present a cheque for £200.
