INNER WHEEL NEWS

        October 2008

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . Members attending this month were looking radiant in shades of pink in recognition of the charity Cancer Research UK – they also each donated £2 to that charity.

Letters had been received from last month’s speakers thanking us for our very generous support. A pattern for knitting jumpers for children in Africa is available for anyone interested.

Dorothy Bell, our district chairman, will be visiting us in November. Her nominated charity is Shelter Boxes, and it was agreed that we would present her with a cheque for £100.

The district ‘Alzheimers’ Walk’ at Dinton Pastures was supported by our president, Beryl Williams, and Pam Coopey, and a cheque for £25 was sent.

It was agreed to donate £250 to Water Aid – this being the monthly collection from the ‘penny pot’. The speaker for Water Aid, Ann Whitlock, gave a presentation at the Rotary dinner at the end of the month, to which all members of our Inner Wheel club were invited. The presentation of our cheque was made at this meeting, as was one for £250 by members of the Rotary Club of Ascot.

Our Christmas Lunch is being held at Mill Ride Golf Club on Wednesday, 10th December, 12.30 for 1 p.m., at a cost of £18 (to include mulled wine on arrival). It was agreed that, at this meeting, members should each bring a wrapped gift worth no more than £5.

The ‘vanishing tea party’ is continuing with members giving tea parties to several people who each give £2.50 (money to be sent on to Jane Short). The Macmillan coffee mornings in September raised the grand sum of £380 for Macmillan Nurses – thanks to the hard work of Anne Sherman. The profit made from the Progressive Supper was £136.

Enid Gibbs gave an amusing report on a recent visit to the Burnham Inner Wheel Club, which was held at Dorney Lake.

A short discussion took place with regard to our support for local charities. It was agreed to distribute tins of biscuits on Inner Wheel Day, 10th January, to elderly people living alone.

Both Gunnel Weiler and Mary Bowles are now making steady progress – but we were alarmed to hear that Julia Hepburn has had a bad fall resulting in a broken arm. We send our best wishes to her, and to her husband Athol, who is expecting to undergo surgery in the next week or so.
