INNER WHEEL NEWS

        April 2008

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . President Hilary opened the meeting by introducing our speaker, Mr Peter Johnston, who would later be giving us facts and figures about breast cancer.

The recent Danish Evening, provided by Sonja Bowyer and Gerda Birch had proved a great success, and they were accorded thanks for all their hard work. The evening raised £212, and it was agreed to present the Day Centre with a cheque for £250. Barbara Donovan thanked all members who supported the Day Centre.

A report on Rotary District 1090 conference was given, and members participating had thoroughly enjoyed good fellowship and friendship.

It was agreed that £800 be sent to the Thames Valley and Chilterns Air Ambulance as proceeds from our Birthday Lunch.

A report from Tom Conlin on his recent journey to Kosovo was not without events!! A French ferry strike resulted in the convoy leaving a day late. An illegal immigrant tried to hitch a lift but discovered that they were travelling in the wrong direction! They reached Kosovo and delivered 80 tonnes of aid – and then had to make large detours on the way back to England.

It was very pleasing to welcome Rhoda Brown back – she was accompanied by her daughter who was acting as her chauffeuse. Alice Pack was recovering from ‘flu and to her we gave our best wishes. Our thoughts and best wishes also go to Moya Harvey who has just undergone an operation for breast cancer. She attended the meeting and thanked everyone for the many messages and flowers received. For those members who remember Joan Hewitt, she has recently undergone major surgery for cancer, but is recovering well.

We were now addressed by Mr Peter Johnston, Community Liaison Officer for the Breast Cancer Campaign. The aim of that organization is to be the leading specialist in breast cancer research which accounts for nearly one in three cancers in women. Many of us are reaching the critical age group, and he couldn’t stress enough how important it was in discovering it early, i.e. by having regular checks at the Parapet is essential. Pink ribbon badges were purchased by the members. Chris Valentine gave the vote of thanks.

Many invitations have been received from other Inner Wheel Clubs. Members wishing to participate in any of these events should contact Sue Price.

Finally, Chris Valentine gave a short talk about the Rotary website and how to enjoy news and gossip. Her husband, Ian (currently President of the Rotary Club of Ascot), has recently received an award from District for the best website in District 1090. We congratulate him on keeping the Ascot Club to the forefront in IT information.

Jennifer Newport’s granddaughter, Camilla, successfully completed the Flora London Marathon on Sunday, 13th April, and thanks everyone who supported her.
