INNER WHEEL NEWS

            November 2007

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . The meeting commenced with the induction of Val Weatherell as our newest member; and was presented with a yellow rose of friendship. Jennifer Newport was feeling well again. Those members who assisted at the District meeting were thanked for assisting with the coffee rota. Money raised from serving coffee - £100 – will be forwarded to ‘Mercy Ships’.

It was agreed that Christmas cards may be distributed at the Christmas lunch on Wednesday, 12th December, if desired. Others may decide to give to charities. Members are asked to bring a gift to the value of £5 for a ‘lucky dip’.

Many invitations had been received from other clubs at this busy time of the year. If interested, members can obtain full information from Sue Price. Roslyn Walters gave an interesting and comprehensive report on Association Council minutes. The Annual Conference next year will be held at Blackpool on April 7th to 9th.

Inner Wheel Day is on Thursday, 10th January, and will be marked by a frugal lunch kindly provided at the home of Jane Short. Proceeds from this lunch will be donated to ‘Mercy Ships’.

A letter had been received from Tom Conlin thanking members for their financial support. He writes that future convoys to Kosovo may be difficult as the political situation worsens, but maybe Bosnia would be a possibility. Our help is still badly needed.

Members were asked if they would consider sending gifts of food and toiletries (sufficient to fill a shoe box) to soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. A list of suggested items was circulated and filled boxes to be handed to Sue Price or Hilary Mear before 9th December.

Our speaker for the evening was Fiona Try who, with her husband, had travelled in convoy to Serbia with aid. She gave an illustrated talk which really brought home to us the dangers and rigours of such a journey. The blankets we knit are quickly snapped up; so we will continue to knit them. Fiona was presented with a poinsettia.

Once again Alice Pack and Sonja Bowyer kindly invited all members and partners to a mulled wine, coffee and mince pies morning to Alice Pack’s home on Friday, 7th December.

We would like to send Christmas greetings to all our friends in Ascot Rotary, and to wish them well for 2008.
