We hope the year does not continue as Handover started!
Torrential rain greeted the guests arriving at Dorney Reach rowing
centre. Along the way we had mislaid the bell and the floral
presentations. Then flames were seen on top table as a programme
fell onto a candle - soon extinguished but quite a bit of ash

Vice President Ian reminded members that there will be NO
MEETING of the Rotary Club of Ascot on 20th June, as it is in the
middle of Royal Ascot week. Ian encouraged members to "scatter"
to other local clubs during the week beginning 18th June. As an
added incentive, Ian is offering a bottle of wine for the most
interesting "Visit to Other Clubs" item at our meeting
on 4th July. |

launch the Dragon Boat bought by the local Rotary Clubs (and to

For the fifth Wednesday in May we were pleased to welcome
the ladies to join our meeting. Our guest speaker was Amanda
Foister, Commercial Manager of the Longridge Outdoor Activity
Centre, near Marlow. She told us of the progress the centre
was making in raising the funds to purchase the freehold of
the site, and of the work that the centre does with young
people and with corporate users. |

A small but select group of 8 went to see a performance of
Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Sorcerer" by
Windsor
& Eton Operatic Society at the
Norden Farm
Centre for the Arts, in Maidenhead. It was a very enjoyable
performance in an interesting theatre environment. |

A group of RCA members made a "pilgrimage" to Reims,
to visit the town and to sample the local champagnes. Further

For the May Friends meeting we were very pleased to
welcome back for the second time David Duff to talk about "The
Waterloo Campaign" the three days leading up to the
famous battle. |

members of the RC of Ingelheim, old friends from our visit to

Foundation Chair Brian, VP Ian and his wife Chris attended the
GSE Hong Kong team farewell rally at the Holiday Inn, Maidenhead
(home of the two Maidenhead Rotary Clubs). The members of the
departing team made some very good presentations summarising what
they had learned from their visit, and their observations on our
clubs. |

Our monthly "Friends" evening attendance was
augmented with four visitors from the Rotary Club of Reading
Maiden Erlegh, who were on a "scatter" as their
normal meeting location was not available. We all enjoyed a
very interesting talk by Rotarian Leslie Thorogood of the
Rotary Club of Maidenhead Thames on the history of the English
language. We learnt of the successive influences of the Celts,
Romans, Germans, Vikings, French and Greek which have resulted
in a language rich in vocabulary and nuances. |

Our Inner Wheel organised a trip to the Mill at Sonning to enjoy
a meal followed by an excellent performance of Neil Simon's 1960's
comedy "Barefoot in the Park". |

21 Rotarians and ladies from RCA attended the 1090 District
Conference in Eastbourne over the weekend of 30th March to 1st
April. The Conference took up the theme "Facing the
Challenge", with a mix of informative and entertaining
speakers. |

Ascot Race Course in aid of Thames Hospicecare. Over £400 was

David Jones Dixieland Band. The music was lively and was much

at the second Boehringer-Ingelheim Community Lecture . The
essential message was DONT SMOKE and protect your
respiratory system. It will make your future life more enjoyable.
We were given this news and an entertaining and interactive
session by the Consultant from our own King Edward VII Hospital,
Windsor. His patients are truly lucky to be in such competent
hands. |
