Rotary - District 1090 Conference March 2010, Eastbourne

Moya writes: - President Colin and Hilary Corio and Moya and Alan Harvey attended the District 1090 Conference held at Eastbourne. The Conference opened with addresses by RI Presidents Representative Rotarian Thomas M. Thorfinnson and RIBI Presidents Representative Rotarian Jim Molson. 

The First Guest speaker was Lizzie Webb well known for her daily fitness sessions on breakfast television. Lizzie taught aerobics and dance as a volunteer at Honeycombed Juvenile Prison for boys. She subsequently teamed up with Olympic Rower Debbie Ford and formed Creativity in Sport a community interest company. The have their own accredited teaching course “Body Rocks “which has been specifically devised to engage disadvantaged young people. The next speaker was Robin Tattler who spoke about the Homeless World Cup. A global social enterprise the Homeless World Cup now engages over 30.000 people a year who are homeless in over 60 countries. Rotarians can support homeless people with the Football Box. 

The first day ended with entertainment “Our kind of Music” .

Day two Rotarian Alan French spoke about “A hand up, in Africa” and Rotarian David Barrett on “Nyumbani" Presentations from the Ambassadorial Scholars, GSE Teams and “Thanks for life” followed. Lisa Morris who was our District’s Ambassadorial Scholar to South Africa in 2005 spoke about the 2 Matching Grants with 14 Clubs from our District which she has been involved with. She has received a Paul Harris.Sapphire award from her host Club in Grahamstown and is about to become a Rotarian. 

We then had a presentation from the Wye Valley Bourne End Interact Club. 

Following the Presidents Lunch there was the Foundation Rally and in the evening the District Governors Banquet and Ball. 

Sunday we had “Time for Reflection” led by Rev. Canon David Tonkinson, then the presentation of the various awards and a presentation by Eleanor Cracknell, District Rotaract Chairman. John Green a trustee of Shelterbox spoke about the recent event in Haiti. Highly trained Shelterbox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary Clubs worldwide. Since its inception in 2000 Shelter box has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief providing shelter and dignity following over 80 disasters in more than 50 countries. 

We were the giving a foretaste of next years conference to be held in Birmingham and the conference ended with Rosemary Hawthorne “The Knicker Lady” who gave an amusing talk on the history of Knickers. It was a most enjoyable weekend.
