Friends Programme, September 2008

In the September Friends meeting we were pleased to welcome the members of the recent Rotary District 1090 Group Study Exchange (GSE) team that Rotary sponsored to Romania and the Republic of Moldova. A 15 minute presentation was given from each of the team members, Adrian Pask, Oonagh McCarthy and Marco Maltoni on their prospective of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, with their diverse cultures.

For the October Friends meeting we are pleased to welcome Richard Day, LVO.RVM.JP who will talk on the Fire and Restoration of Windsor Castle. Richard started at Windsor Castle in 1957 with a seven year apprenticeship and then became the Queen’s Head Bookbinder in 1975 on the retirement of his father. Richard retired from the Castle in February 2002.

During this time, he was also a Part-time Fireman with the Windsor Castle Fire Brigade for 34 years and lead the first crew into the attack on The Great Fire of Windsor Castle on 20th November 1992. The talk on the Fire and Restoration of Windsor Castle will show the aftermath of the fire and the restoration of the castle by skilled craftsmen and craftswomen to how we see Windsor Castle to-day. Richard will give a slide show with all these moments in time – it promises to be a very interesting talk about a subject we all know something about but not I suspect the detail.
