Friends Programme, November 2008

There is no Friends meeting in December 2008 – as published previously. However the Rotary Club is running the New Years Day Wheelbarrow Race and in conjunction with that event is the traditional raffle.  Tickets are now on sale, and all the monies raised from the Event and the Raffle goes to the Ascot/Sunninghill/Chandler’s Day Centre.

For the November Friends meeting, which was a joint meeting with Ascot Round Table and Ascot 41 Club, we were pleased to welcome retired CI John Woolley who spoke on his part in the detection of the robbers in the crime of the century, “The Great Train Robbery in 1963”. A very theatrical & fascinating 45 minute presentation followed by an excellent 35 minute Q&A session.

For the January Friend’s meeting, we are privileged to welcome back for a second lecture, Historian Dr. Peter Caddick-Adams, TD, BA (Hons), PhD, Author, Military Historian, Defence Analyst, Battlefield Tour Guide, Broadcaster who will speak on "Military Strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan”.

Peter is a regular contributor on the History Channel and lectures in military history and strategic studies. He has led over two hundred battlefield terrain studies for military audiences of several nationalities, and at all levels of command, to a wide variety of destinations including the United States, Italy and Hong Kong and is a frequent visitor to the First and Second World War battlefields of Northern France, Belgium and Holland.

He joined the Territorial Army in 1985 and served during 1996-7 as the official NATO historian covering operations in Bosnia, based in Sarajevo. He is the author of two books and has written numerous articles in the British Army Review, Army Quarterly & Defence Journal, and Royal United Services Institute Journal.
