Friends Programme, March 2007

For the March Friends meeting on Wednesday 14th March we welcomed back Richard Snailham for the fourth time – giving a talk entitled “Walk to the base camp of Mount Everest”. Richard has spoken to us previously in the Friends program on “Hidden Corners of Brittany”, “The Falklands in Winter” and “The Blue Nile”. Richard was a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for 25 years and is a worldwide expedition leader.

For the April Friends meeting on Wednesday 11th April we are very pleased to welcome Leslie Thorogood, a Maidenhead Thames Rotarian – giving a talk entitled “The Origins of English”. Leslie is a Fellow of the Institute of Linguists and is a Senior Business Manager, Consultant, Language Teacher, Lecturer speaking French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, German, Italian, & others. English is part of the Indo-Aryan group of languages. It has as its core the ancient language of Sanskrit, the classical language of India. It was spoken by a people from the Copper/Bronze ages, whose origins are still obscure, probably from North West India. Leslie will chart the evolution of the English Language to the present day – a very interesting story.

Format for the evening:-

  • 1930 - 2030 - Meal
  • 2030 - 2050 - Rotary Business
