Friends Programme, July 2008

In the July Friends meeting we were privileged to welcome Hugh Davies, the inventor of the Passfaces user authentication system and founder of Visage Developments Limited. Hugh's main interest is WW II Intelligence on which he gives public talks and is a guide at Bletchley Park the world famous WW II Code Breaking Centre. And on the first of three talks to us he spoke on Enigma - how cracking the enemy codes led to the world's first computer. This was a very interesting talk with an extensive Q&A session and Hugh will be back next year to talk to us on the WW11 subject of “Deception - How it helped to win the war”.

For the August Friend’s meeting we are very pleased to welcome back Martin Bell, a Friend of the Rotary Club of Ascot and known to us all, and John Oblein a friend of Martin’s, who will run for the fourth successive year their fun quiz evening based on topical subjects for all ages! A very special welcome to you Martin for showing great courage in the face of your recent adversity.

The format for the evening will be the same as last year with the quiz commencing immediately after the meal and a little Rotary business at 2030, with a short break at 2115 and finishing at 2200. Martin has requested that teams will be formed with tables of six persons. Unless I receive a request for persons to be on a specific table then Mike Price will put the tables together in the normal random manner.

As in the previous three years this should be a very enjoyable fun evening – please support this event as you did previously when Martin/John presented their Quiz evening to us.
