Friends Programme, July 2007

At the July Friend’s meeting, attended by 16 Friends/Guests as well as Rotarians, we were privileged to welcome Glen Davis, a Foreign Service Officer, from the US Embassy in London who gave an excellent talk on some recent trends in US education, including the movement away from traditional disciplines such as history to physics to new “disciplines “such as communications, ethnic studies, gender studies, leadership studies; the emphasis on aptitude rather than achievement; the triumph of the seminar over the lecture; and the branding of American colleges and universities. The Q & A session was very full and interesting.

For the August Friend’s meeting we are very pleased to welcome back Martin Bell, a Friend of the Rotary Club of Ascot and known to us all, and John Oblein a friend of Martin’s, who will run for the third successive year their fun quiz evening including a high tech laptop/digital presentation of the questions and answers based on topical subjects for persons in their 50-70s!

The format for the evening will be the same as last year with the quiz commencing immediately after the meal and a little Rotary business at 2030, with a short break at 2115 and finishing at 2200. Martin has requested that teams will be formed with tables of six persons. Unless I receive a request for persons to be on a specific table then Mike Price will put the tables together in the normal random manner.

As in the previous two years this should be a very enjoyable fun evening – please support this event as you did previously when Martin/John presented their Quiz evening to us.
