Friends Programme, April 2009For the April Friend’s meeting we were pleased to welcome Alan Grace who gave a talk on “Forces Broadcasting” including references to the fascinating story of ENSA - the Entertainments National Service Association – on which subject Alan will speak to us next year. For the May Friend’s meeting we are very pleased to welcome back for the fourth time David Duff whose previous talks were the Sea Battles of Trafalgar, Jutland and Midway, the Waterloo Campaign (the three days leading up to the famous battle) & the actual Battle of Waterloo itself. David’s talk this time will be The Schlieffen Plan - how Germany lost the 1st World War in the first eight weeks. As previously David’s brief CV shows he could be a ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’ – modesty having met him for the last three years. Apparently in his life he has been an art student, a building-site labourer, a soldier, an insurance salesman, a long-distance lorry driver and when all else failed he fell amongst rogues and villains in that final refuge for rascals and second sons, the second-hand car trade. However information from his friend and former Friend of the Rotary Club of Ascot, Roy Towndrow, now living in Sherborne, reveals that David is also Director of the RSS (Richmond Shakespeare Society) and as last time we are in for a quite a presentation. We look forward to greeting David again, coming from Dorset, with his friend and former Ascot 41 Club member/Friend of the Rotary Club of Ascot Roy Towndrow who commented to me via e-mail on David’s talk this time: “David, who specialises in talks about subjects from the 17th to 19th century, using presentation technology at least 2 centuries older (whiteboard), has leapt, yea bounded, into the 21st century and produced a stunning PowerPoint presentation.” I am sure it will be great evening.
