Community Service 2005-6

1. Funding Applications

The committee has received and evaluated over 40 applications for funding during the year. Of these, about a dozen were dismissed immediately, generally the untargeted mail shots from the national charities, and from the remainder, about a dozen have been selected to receive a donation. Approximately £8,600 has been paid out to date, with another £600 in the pipeline, bringing the total of donations to £9,200. The long-committed spend of £1,761 on the memorial benches has also been made, bringing the total outgoings to around £11,000. Our major beneficiaries have been:

  • Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance £2,600
  • Thames Hospicecare £2,000
  • Life Education Centres £1,000
  • North Ascot Community Centre £1,000
  • Children with Special Needs £875

2. Youth Speaks

The local heats were held in November in St. Georges School, this year with two competitions running in parallel for the first time. The winning teams performed exceptionally well, and went on to success in the zone competitions. The evening was well organised by Mike Leaman, and those Rotarians and Inner Wheel ladies who attended enjoyed a good evening of presentations.

3. Children's Concerts

Two concerts were staged this year at the Hexagon in Reading, sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Ascot and Wokingham. The first involved around 400 pupils of schools in the Maidenhead and Ascot area, and the second around 300 pupils of first schools in Windsor. Both concerts were hugely enjoyed by the children and their parents, and although not primarily fund-raising opportunities, there was an excess of income over expenditure of £2,200 across the two concerts. This has been divided equally between the charitable funds of the clubs. Our guests of honour included District 1090 Governor David Buckland and the Worshipful the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Councillor Eric Wiles. The major part of the organisation was carried out by the ever-enthusiastic Clive Waterman, with Rotary coordination provided by Bill Sheppard and David Gold (Wokingham).
