In simple terms Probus is an organisation for retired business and professional men (or those approaching retirement) to meet on a regular basis and socialise.

The Probus Club of Ascot has been in existence since 1987 and currently has 62 members plus 2 Honorary Members. Membership is limited to 70 ‘ordinary’ members and thus at the time of writing we have 8 vacancies. The annual membership fee is currently £15 with a joining fee of £10.

We meet on the fourth Monday of each month at Englemere in Kings Ride Ascot (not far from the entrance to Heatherwood Hospital) at 12.30 for 1.00pm luncheon, which is usually a main course and a dessert or cheese, currently charged at £17. There is a cash bar.

Apart from the December Christmas Luncheon, to which wives or partners are invited and the Club’s AGM meeting in March, each meeting has a speaker who gives a presentation. Subjects vary enormously.

Attendance at each luncheon is usually between 45 and 55 members and the occasional guest.

There is a Garden Interest Group, quite popular for organised tours of famous houses and gardens. Plans are being formulated for perhaps two organized visits each year to other places of interest.

One other major social occasion is the Summer Garden Party held in a member’s garden in Ascot.
