Annual Sunninghill Fancy Dress Wheelbarrow Race

The 14th Annual Sunninghill Fancy Dress Wheelbarrow Race will take place on January 1st 2010 at 12 noon and organisers are calling for teams to sign up and get into training now! Organised with the support of the Rotary Club of Ascot, the event is the perfect start to the village year and a key fundraiser for the Ascot District Day Centre.

The aim of the race is for teams of four ( men, women and children or mixed)  to push a wheelbarrow with one of their number in it, around the marshalled course, which starts and ends at the School Road car park behind St. Michael’s School. Along the way, there are six stopping points, including three pubs and three other 'fuelling' stations, where each member drinks a free half pint of beer, soft drink, lager or water. This year, teams can include under 18’s (identified and under supervision of an adult team member) so family teams are welcome to take part. Previous barrow boys (and girls) have included teams from local pubs, hotels, sports centres, golf clubs, drama groups, schools and local residents.

As this is a charitable function, there is only a small entry fee of £10.  Entrants are asked to obtain as much sponsorship as possible which will be donated to the Ascot District Day Centre. And rumour has it that the Rotary District Governor of the Thames Valley region will be bringing along her own team!

Although this is called a race, and there is a trophy for the fastest time, it is also a fancy dress parade and there are prizes for the best fancy dress, as well as the team raising the most sponsorship money.
