A busy time of year for Rotary Club of Ascot

Spring is a busy time for the Rotary Club of Ascot.  A week ago 23 members and partners attended the annual conference of the local district (Central-southern England) of Rotary Clubs, which this year was held in Torquay.  Over 1000 Rotarians and guests from the district and beyond heard inspirational speakers talking of the successes of the past year, and the objectives for the coming year, the principle goal being to help raise $200M worldwide for the eradication of Polio.

To that end, the Rotary Club of Ascot will be holding a Race Night on Saturday 25th April starting at 7:30 in the Carnation Hall, Chavey Down.  Admission is £12.50 and this includes a Fish and Chip supper.  There will be a cash bar.  Further details are available from Vice President Colin Corio on 01344 772043.

On the educational front, the Rotary Club is looking for candidates to participate in a group of four young professionals who will be visiting South Africa and Lesotho in October this year.  This project will give the participants the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with people working in similar professions in the areas to be visited, as well as getting a feel for the culture and heritage of those countries.  Travel and subsistence costs are paid by Rotary, but candidates will need to negotiate the “time off” with their employer!

There is also an Ambassadorial Scholarship on offer in the Central-Southern England district of Rotary Clubs.  This can be worth up to $24,000, and is intended to fund participation in a one or two year post-graduate course of a humanitarian nature at an overseas university of the candidate’s choice.  The Ambassadorial Scholarship is part of the world's largest privately funded international scholarships programme, and to date some 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices.  To find out more about any of these opportunities, contact your local Rotary Club.

But Rotary is not all fund-raising and business meetings – the photograph shows members of the Rotary Club of Ascot en-route to a “Masked Ball”, which was a feature of this year’s District Conference.
