Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race raises £5,000

Ascot Rotary Club members turned out in strength on New Year’s Day to run the annual Wheelbarrow Race at Sunninghill. The weather was calm and quiet, and pretty cold, so perhaps an ideal winter’s day. 16 teams of 4 took the start-line, all in fancy dress, and raced around the 1.25 mile course, consuming beer and other drinks along the way.  Hundreds of spectators attended, and enjoyed the event.

The winning time was 8 minutes 20 seconds, by the men’s team ‘Taking the St Michael’, and the winning ladies team was the ‘Sparrowettes’.  The fancy dress prize was awarded to ‘The Snowmen’.

The prizes were presented by Sir Ray Whitney, at the Carpenters Arms, where an auction and a raffle were held. The event raised over £5,000, the total being entirely for the Chandler Day Centre in Sunninghill.

Rotarian Geoff Donovan, Trustee of the Ascot District Day Centre said, “It was a wonderful day. We raised over £5000 and everybody had great fun at the same time! The Day Centre is very grateful to the local community and to the Rotary Club of Ascot for all your help throughout the year, and of course for running the Wheelbarrow Race. You allow us to continue to support the elderly residents of Sunninghill, Sunningdale and Ascot at the Day Centre and through Meals on Wheels."
