The
Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race, New
Year’s Day
On Sunday 1st January 2006 the 10th
annual Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race took place.
This year 11 teams in fancy dress competed to complete the course around
and through the village centre. The
Winners were AFC DUKES, who completed the one mile course, having stopped 6
times for half a pint, in the amazing time of 10 minutes 45 seconds. The prize for best fancy dress went to the
Trafalgar team.
The event raised a very satisfactory total of
£3,250 on the day, through company and team sponsorship, an auction, a raffle
and the bucket collection. David Mear,
chairman of the organising committee, said “It is hoped that this figure will
rise to around £4,000 by the time all of the pledges are paid in, and the
presentation of the proceeds to Sunninghill Day Care Centre for the Elderly is
made”. A token cheque for £500,
representing the Ascot Racecourse sponsorship money was presented to Mrs June
Martin of the Day Centre after the race, by Mr Neil Morgan of the organising
committee.
The Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race is organised by Ascot Round Table and the main event sponsor this year is Ascot Racecourse.
Members from the Rotary Club of Ascot and the local community assisted with organising and marshalling. Local pubs, the Carpenter’s Arms, the Dog and Partridge and the Duke’s Head also supported the event.
