The
Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race, New
Year’s Day
On Sunday 1st January 2006 the 10th
annual Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race will take place, with teams in fancy dress
competing to complete the course around and through the village centre. The race begins at 12:00, and there will be
six stopping points along the route, where the teams must stop until each team
member has consumed a half pint drink.
And of course, at all times that they are on the move, one member of the
team must be IN the wheelbarrow. All
team members seek individual sponsorship to participate, and all money raised
goes to support the Sunninghill Day Care Centre for the Elderly. There is a prize for the team with the most
sponsorship – there are also prizes for the fastest time and best fancy dress.
The course begins at School Road car park
heading north on Upper Village road, turning right into Oriental road, turning
right into Sunninghill High Street, proceeding along the high street, past the
other end of School Road, over the railway bridge then turning right into Truss
Hill Road, and finally right again into Upper Village Road over the other
railway bridge to finish back by the car park at the junction of School Road. The total distance covered is about 1 mile.
The Sunninghill Wheelbarrow Race is organised by Ascot Round Table and the main event sponsor this year is Ascot Racecourse. Members from the Rotary Club of Ascot are assisting with organising and marshalling. Local pubs, the Carpenter’s Arms, the Dog and Partridge and the Duke’s Head are also supporting the event. Lindsay Nutbrown of Ascot Round Table says “It is a great way to shake off the excesses of New Years Eve, give a sense of purpose to getting up before noon on New Years Day and start the New Year by doing some good for an excellent local charity.”
Anyone wishing to enter a team should contact Neil Morgan on 01344
621679. Team members have to be over 18 years
of age.
