Newsletter July, 2010

Jacqui Butcher writes . . . President Christine opened the meeting by thanking all the members who gave so much support for the ‘Al Fresco’ lunch. It was a great success with 97 people attending. The weather was fine, the lunch was most enjoyable and the schoolchildren entertained us; and we must not forget Edith Hunter for providing us with such a lovely venue – and the garden was still not crowded!! We thank especially those Rotarians who acted as car park attendants, waiters and any other mundane job that needed doing, including setting up and clearing away!!!

Our President then inducted a new member, Isabel Strong, who we hope will enjoy the fellowship and friendship of Inner Wheel. She was presented with a badge and a yellow rose.

Helen Mills, our guest speaker, was introduced to us with Chris giving us a potted history of her life – a very busy lady. Her talk was all about the history of greetings cards through the ages. The ‘penny post’ started in 1836 with the first Christmas card. Various cards and albums were circulated for us to see, including reproduction Victorian cards.

News from overseas report:  Tom Conlin’s next convoy will take place in October. Sixteen bags for girls and 16 bags for boys are now ready for filling. If you feel that you can help please contact Hilary Mear. Another completed blanket by Ellen Baker was displayed. Stamps and cellophane bags are once again being collected.

Members are invited to join president Chris Valentine for a cup of tea and a slice of cake on Thursday, 12th August, from 2.30 to 4 p.m. Please let her know if you are able to attend.

Jane Short is organizing a walk of approximately three miles in length on Monday, 13th September. More details later.

Letters have been received from the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance thanking us for a cheque for £550; also Hope & Homes for s cheque for £840.

We have had news of Gunnell Weiler who had a fall which resulted in her breaking her right femur. This has resulted in an operation with the prospect of several weeks out of action. We send her our best wishes.
