About Our Club
The Rotary Club of Ascot principally provides support to well known
Local Community activities and raises money for both local and some
international causes.
We promote such events as a "Youth Speaks" competition and a "Schools
Music Concert" for local schools. We also make awards to selected
pupils who have given "Service Above Self" and assist schools by
undertaking mock interviews with their students.
Major local causes supported in recent years include the
Ascot
Day Centre, Thames
Valley Air Ambulance,
Thames
Hospicecare, Children
with Special Needs Foundation, the North Ascot Community
Association, Life
Education Centres and
Charters
Youth & Community Centre. We also support a number of smaller
applications and individual cases.
Our club has numerous social events that combine fund raising and fun
for Rotarians, families and friends. In recent years these have included "Monte
Carlo" evenings, Garden parties, Quiz Nights, Jazz and other Band
concerts, a Hollywood Evening, and an Auction of Promises. (See our
Club Bulletin for upcoming club
events and other news.)
Our major fundraising activities include a Charity Golf tournement
followed by a gala dinner and auction, the Sunninghill Wheelbarrow race
and of course our Christmas collections. We also work with the Round Table
of Ascot in support of the Ascot Fireworks display.
Internationally we support Water Aid, Aquaboxes, Sightsavers and
individual requests for assistance. Major requests for financial aid to
international catastrophes are normally undertaken in conjunction with
other Rotary Clubs locally, nationally or internationally.
We have introduced a very active "Friends"
programme, with the objective to facilitate recruitment and to
re-establish the position of the Rotary Club of Ascot in the local
community.
Once a year, there is a District Conference, which has been held at
various resorts, including Bournemouth, Brighton, Eastbourne, Plymouth,
Torquay, Cardiff and Harrogate. This gives Rotarians and their partners a
break away from Ascot for socialisation and fellowship, as well as an
opportunity to meet Rotarians from other clubs and to hear what has been
going on across the district.
We have close links with two other European clubs (St Nazaire in France
and Gulpen-Waals in Holland) with visits on a reciprocal basis. We also
visit other clubs internationally to further good will and fellowship.
The fellowship that is generated is quite exceptional and various
members become close friends - one of the reasons for this is that there
is a very active 'Inner Wheel' Club which is for the partners of Rotarians
this meets monthly and welcomes new members. It has its own social
events and also joint events with our club.
The Club meets at the Mill Ride Golf Club on Wednesdays - each month the
1st and 3rd of these being at lunch-time (1300 1400) and the 2nd
and 4th in the evening (1930 2130). When there is a fifth Wednesday
we have a joint evening meeting (1930 2130) with our partners.
